Service Patterns: Weekday M-Train & Weekend F-Train
Under the MTA service pattern implemented in December 2025 following the completed 63rd Street tunnel track replacement, the M-Train provides direct weekday service (approx. 6:00 AM – 9:30 PM) through the 63rd Street Tunnel to Roosevelt Island.
During nights and weekends, the F-Train serves the station. Both lines connect Roosevelt Island to Lexington Ave / 63rd St in Manhattan in 4 minutes (1 stop) and 21st St-Queensbridge in Queens in 3 minutes.
- • Weekday Daytime (6:00 AM – 9:30 PM): M-Train (Queens Blvd Local to Forest Hills / 6th Ave Local to Essex St & Middle Village)
- • Nights & Weekends: F-Train (Queens Blvd Express / 6th Ave Express to Brooklyn & Coney Island)
- • Travel Times: 4 minutes to Lex/63rd (Manhattan) · 3 minutes to 21st-Queensbridge (Queens)
- • Tunnel Infrastructure: The 63rd Street track replacement project concluded in April 2024 with full direct-fixation track operational
Station Architecture, Depth & Elevator Access
Built inside solid bedrock underneath the East River channel, the Roosevelt Island subway station platforms sit over 100 feet below ground level, ranking as the second deepest station in the NYC transit system.
Reaching the platforms requires descending two flights of long escalators or taking the high-capacity elevator bank on the north side of the station entrance.
- • Station Entrance: Main Street at Riverwalk Commons (in the middle of Riverwalk)
- • Depth: Over 100 feet / 30.5 meters (2nd deepest in NYC after 191st St on the 1-Train)
- • Elevators: Fully ADA accessible with direct elevators to both platform directions
Cell Reception & Service Advisories
Transit Wireless provides cellular coverage across the mezzanine and platform levels. Signal can drop along the steep escalator tubes, so commuters should check live departure boards before descending.
During scheduled MTA track maintenance, trains may run via the 53rd St tunnel. The Roosevelt Island Tramway ($2.90) and NYC Ferry Astoria Route ($4.50) serve as immediate alternatives to reach Manhattan.
